Foldable TVs are the next big talk in the electronics world. The television industry evolved in the past few years in terms of quality and features. Powerful displays like 4k or 8k resolution and screens as big as 85″ won the consumers. But such television sets require huge space in the house. People today are shifting towards minimalism.

What Is A Foldable TV?

A foldable television is a new technology that might change the way we look at them. Today, television sets are available in all sizes and styles. When television was first invented, it was a huge mass that took up a lot of space. So, as technology developed, the width of television started decreasing.

Since there is a direct relationship between the high population and less living space in the world, the need to organize furniture increased. Affordable homes are smaller that do not hold space for chunky pieces of furniture or appliances. Therefore, TVs are no longer fat chunks of occupying space. We have flat television sets that minimize space consumption.

As a solution to saving space, brands have come up with foldable TVs. Foldable televisions consist of a rollable display. It means that the screen rolls like a paper and squeezes in the minimum space. Foldable television opens or closes like an accordion.

What Is Rollable Display?

A rollable display or flexible display is a screen that folds without disrupting the visuals on the screen. The flexible display can be used on any device like a television. The technology of the rollable display makes a foldable tv. How does it work?

How Does Flexible Display Work?

A flexible display uses three different types of technology.

Electronic Paper- Electronic paper is a technology that reflects light like a paper. Such screens offer better readability and a wider view angle.

Gyricon- Gyricon is also an electronic paper but more developed. This paper can be erased and rewritten a thousand times.

OLED- OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode. It is an LED that emits visible light. It can display deep blacks as the contrast ratio is high in an LED. A lot of growth is seen in OLED based flexible display recently.

A foldable TV or a rollable TV is one which folds like a notebook. It is like a paper that folds like an accordion into the base. So, when you are not using the television, it folds or rolls back into the base becoming invisible.

Nowadays, people follow a design that is cohesive in the house. Minimalist interiors also lead to the innovation of such designs that can be hidden, when not in use. There are two types of television screens. One is OLED and the other is LED. OLED screens have high brightness and they consume more power as compared to LED screens. People prefer LED TV because it is more sustainable.

Foldable OLED TV

Currently, there is only a foldable OLED TV under speculations. LG has come up with the technology and design of a rollable OLED TV. It is a 65-inch television with flexible features to roll up or down. Although foldable OLED TV has not hit the markets, we are eagerly waiting for newer inventions. Hopefully, foldable OLED TVs will be available in the market in the coming years. However, these foldable television sets will be highly expensive considering that the technology is new.

Things To Know About Foldable TV

Foldable tv sounds exciting, but there are some things you should know about it. Rollable OLED tv might not be available in the market until about 2021. Why is there such a long wait? There are not many companies that would be manufacturing foldable television.

LG came up with the idea of a rollable tv. LG’s Signature Series OLED TV R (65R9 rollable television) is a 65-inch OLED TV. It comes with a base that acts as storage and consists of the mechanism for the foldable tv. The base is also a music system with a 4.2 Atmos sound system.

However, there are no updates regarding its launch. Even if the company puts the OLED tv on sale, then it will be available in Korea first to test the market. Another thing you should know is that flexible display tv is going to be expensive. Normal people may not be able to afford hidden screens at their home.
